FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Monday, April 21, 2003
(Wilmington, DE) – David Sullivan, Acting Director of Revenue announced today that the Grand Jury for the Superior Court in New Castle County returned an indictment against Richard F. Broadbent, 44, a Wilmington insurance agent.
According to the indictment, Broadbent was charged with three misdemeanor counts of willfully failing to file State of Delaware personal income tax returns and report more than $490,000 of gross income received from the operation of his licensed insurance business in the years 1999, 2000, and 2001. The vast majority of this income was comprised of insurance commissions.
Broadbent was required to file a personal income tax return for each of the years in question, yet failed to file tax returns reporting his income. The Division of Revenue calculated the state’s tax loss at more than $9,000.
The charges against Broadbent stem from an investigation conducted by the Delaware Division of Revenue’s Criminal Investigation Unit and referred to the Delaware Attorney General’s office for indictment and prosecution.
The three misdemeanor tax offenses are each punishable by up to a maximum one-year imprisonment and up to $2,300 in fines.
Broadbent awaits arraignment and trial date in Superior Court in Wilmington.
