FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - Wednesday, December 11, 2002
(Wilmington, DE) – William M. Remington, Director of Revenue announced today that a Wilmington physician pleaded guilty in Superior Court for failing to file State of Delaware tax returns for three consecutive years.
Dr. Charles E. Hill, 56, pleaded guilty before NCC Judge Joseph R. Slights, III to three misdemeanor counts of failing to file personal income tax returns for the tax years 1998, 1999, and 2000.
Hill was originally charged in a seven-count indictment in April 2002 with four counts of failing to collect and pay over nearly $11,000 in employee withholding taxes and an additional three counts of failing to file State of Delaware personal income tax returns.
An investigation conducted by the Delaware Division of Revenue’s Criminal Investigation Unit revealed that during the years 1998 through 2000, Hill earned more than $290,000 of Delaware taxable income and owed approximately $15,000 in state taxes on that income. During this period of time, Hill’s Wilmington medical practice generated gross receipts of more than $900,000 from patient fees, insurance company receipts, and Medicare payments.
Hill was sentenced to three years in jail, suspended for three years probation and also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $26,643.49 to the Division of Revenue for his unpaid state personal income taxes and state withholding taxes. In addition, he was ordered to pay a $2,000 court-imposed fine.
