For 10 years, Robin Smith has been teaching federal and state taxes to her advanced accounting students at Smyrna High School.
The students, who are juniors and seniors, take what they learn in their accounting class and transform it into service by preparing tax returns for fellow Smyrna High School classmates.
Students who complete the advanced accounting course with a grade of 85% or better qualify for 3 - 6 hours of college credit.
The opportunity for accounting students to earn college credit comes as part of a program with Wesley College, Wilmington College, Delaware Technical and Community College, Delaware State University and Goldey- Beacom College.
Smith's accounting students are also members of the Business Professionals of America. She is their advisor.
Media representatives are invited to join Smyrna High School accounting students on Wednesday, Jan. 30, at 8:20 a.m. and/or 10:05 as they learn first-hand about state and federal taxes from tax specialists James Stewart, Division of Revenue and Doretha Brown, IRS, who will help them prepare to serve the Smyrna High School student community this filing season.
